Creative Generation Looks at Leadership Transition

Creative Generation is pleased to announce a new project to examine and reflect on what occurs during the leadership transition between executive directors of arts & cultural education organizations and their alumni successors. Through this project, a research report describing cases of this leadership transition as well as a proposal for a guide for future organization leaders undergoing a similar leadership change will be generated.

The landscape of arts education programming is ever-changing. Consequently, leadership within this field must also be dynamic in response to the needs of the youth participating in them and the ever-changing circumstances of our world today. As many arts & cultural education organizations are in growth stages, many are facing their first iterations of leadership succession. This transition is crucial as this handoff occurs from the long-term executives to a new generation - who are often alumni of the program. The success of this handoff can impact the future success of the program.

This project is led by Vida Manalang, the new Research & Knowledge Associate at creative Generation; Vida is an alumni of the 2021 Summer Residency Program, where they began this work.

Creative Generation was founded in April 2019 as a research initiative and has grown its work throughout the United States and around the world. Through pioneering research in the arts and cultural education field – and the relentless support of arts and cultural educators in their work to cultivate the creative capabilities of young people – the organization regularly investigates models of organizational policies and leadership to envision models to best support the youth participating in them.
